What happens when the rulebook doesn’t quite fit?

Our Chair, Isabelle Lessedjina, writes in Africa News Agency about governance in frontier markets, where international standards meet local reality.

What happens when the rulebook doesn’t quite fit?

Conformance is not function

The article explores the gap between conformance and genuine institutional function. That gap is where many organisations fail.

Not charity, not compliance

The question is at the core of what Defy is building. As Isabelle has put it, “Inclusive finance is not charity, nor compliance.”

It is infrastructure and governance. It is the deliberate, collective design of systems built to function under pressure, not just to tick boxes.

Ecosystem intent

About 1.3 billion adults still have no account. Technology is not what they lack. What is missing is ecosystem intent.

Closing that gap demands boards with adaptive judgement and institutions that earn trust through consistency. It also demands ecosystems where inclusion is an explicit design principle, not an afterthought.
